After missing out on Kevin Shattenkirk, the New York Rangers have acquired Brendan Smith from the Red Wings. This on the heels of losing Veteran blueliner Dan Girardi for at least 10 days with an ankle injury. Per Bob McKenzie, the Rangers have sent a 2018 second and 2017 third round draft pick back to Detroit.

The Rangers’ need for defensive help is well documented. After Shattenkirk was traded last night, it was almost a forgone conclusion that the defensive dominoes would start falling. Smith will just be the first of many to go in the next 24 hours.
Rangers fans will think that they overpaid for Smith, but this is the price for deadline blueliners this year. The price has been set for contenders looking for defensive help.
Look to Dmitry Kulikov to garner a lot of attention now. Kyle Quincey, Johnny Oduya, and Mark Streit are also options that could be traded soon. Stay tuned.
