The US Women’s National Team has been in the news quite a lot lately and here they are again. It’s been an interesting year for the team and more specific to this article, this week. Let’s see what’s going on with the team.
2017-18 Team Roster Announced
Right off the heels of their 2017 IIHF national win, next year’s roster for the women’s team has been announced. The roster has a number of familiar faces such as Amanda Kessel and Hilary Knight, both of the NWHL. Kessel, who plays for the New York Riveters, scored a magnificent 18 points in her 8 games last year. Knight, who some consider being one of the best female hockey players in the world, scored 9 points in 5 games in the IIHF Women’s Championship. Another little tidbit, the youngest player on the team, Maddie Rooney, is only 19 years old! Even more interesting, this isn’t even her first time playing with the national team either.
Here is a full video listing all the players put out by USA Hockey:
Practice is going to be a little different this year. USA Hockey has announced that the women’s national team will be practicing in Wesley Chapel, Florida at least until the South Korean Olympic games. The arena they will be playing in, Florida Hospital Center Ice, markets itself as the largest hockey complex in the Southern region of the USA. The rink opened in January of this year and seems to be a very modern, up-to-date complex that will surely compliment the training by team USA.
Robb Stauber Named Head Coach of Team
He’s done it before and he’s going to do it again. A non-surprising addition to the staff of the USWNT is the addition of head coach Robb Stauber. Robb led the team to a 2017 IIHF Women’s Championships win and was an assistant coach with the women’s US team in Sochi at the last Olympics. Stauber also has other experience in coaching in running his own company, Stauber’s Goalcrease, a goaltending training company. Not only does he have IIHF experience, Olympic experience, and private training experience, he also recently coached the Minnesota Whitecaps. The team went .500 under him, not that amazing. But, with supreme talent, Stauber can make a team run like a well-oiled machine.
It’s been an exciting couple of days and a lot has happened. Are you excited to see the USA fight for Olympic gold again at the next Olympics or could you care less about the Olympics? Let us know!
