The Philadelphia Flyers have traded Mark Steit to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Valtteri Filppula
To the Flyers:
2017 4th round pick
2017 conditional 7th round pick
To the Lightning:
In a surprising move at the deadline, the Lightning sent Valtteri Filppula to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Mark Streit. Streit has long been rumored to be the Flyers most valuable asset at the deadline. Buyers are looking for defensive depth and powerplay help, both of which Streit certainly provides.
The Flyers have been seeking help up front, struggling to score at 5v5 for long stretches of time. Filppula will help provide scoring depth on a Flyers team that desperately needs some. Flyer fans should be happy with this deal.
That trade also clears an expansion draft issue for TB

Bob Mckenzie points out why Tampa may have been willing to deal Filppula to the Flyers. Had they kept him, the Lightning would have had to protect him and risk losing Alex Killorn or Vladislav Namestnikov. Another option would be to buy Filppula out at the end of the season. Taking on Mark Streit for the rest of the season to alleviate this makes a lot of sense.
