This New Year’s Day, you will be able to watch the ball drop in Times Square, and then hop on the 7 Train straight to Citi Field, where the New York Rangers will be taking on the Buffalo Sabres in the 2018 Winter Classic, according to sources for Newsday.

This will be the second Winter Classic that each team has appeared in. The Sabres hosted the Winter Classic’s debut in 2008 in Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium (now known as New Era Field) against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Rangers faced off against the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2012 Winter Classic in the City of Brotherly Love.

The Rangers are hardly strangers to the NHL’s outdoor games, however. They have also appeared in two Stadium Series games back in 2014, where they played divisional rivals, the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders, in the historic Yankee Stadium.

The Sabres are expected to be the “home” team, despite the game taking place in the heart of Queens, New York. The Rangers are required to play all 41 home games at Madison Square Garden, or else the arena risks losing tax-exempt status from the City of New York.

These reports contradict rumours from earlier in the year that the Rangers would host the Florida Panthers at New York’s West Point Military Academy.

The New York Rangers are 3-0-0 in outdoor games. The Buffalo Sabres are 0-1-0 when outdoors.
