So this is something that I think is really cool. There is a Canadian mint that is producing a special limited edition Stanley Cup quarter to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup.

The quarter that will only be available in Canada (sorry to all of the rest of us fans me included). The quarter will feature the Stanley Cup surrounded by two hockey players. On the left, it has a player who would have battled for the trophy in its earliest days. On the right is a player from the modern era. Together they represent the full history of the Cup from when it began on March 18, 1892, when Lord Stanley, the governor general of Canada introduced the idea of a championship trophy for the country’s top amateur hockey team.

While the actual look of the cup has changed a bit through the years the Stanly Cup remains a symbol through time of the loved Sport of Canada.

This same Mint. The Royal Candian Mint previously made a commemorative Canadian dollar coin in 1993 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Cup.

As this is not the first time this mint has done a special coin for the cup it leaves the question of what they might do when we hit year 150, or year 175, or 200? I will sure be looking forward to seeing if they continue this cool tradition of producing special edition coins.

One day many years from now people may look back at the various coins that came out over the decades as a top collector’s item for not only hockey fans but serious coin collectors as well.

If you are interested in picking up some of these coins for yourself you can take a look at them Here.
