The Detroit Red Wings called up Defenseman Dan Renouf on Sunday and he appears set to make his NHL Debut against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.

Renouf, 22, was signed to a two-year entry-level contract during March 2016 after spending time at the University of Maine.

The Red Wings play the second of three games in three nights this evening and Renouf was called up as cover for Niklas Kronwall who, at 36, would struggle with the workload.

Standing at 6-foot-3, 209 pounds he should bring a physical element to the Wings’ blue line. This season, he has three goals and 15 points in 58 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins. He also has a team-leading 59 penalty minutes including five fighting majors.

Renouf admitted to that the call-up came as something of a surprise;

“I really wasn’t expecting it. They called me in and I thought we were going to look at video or something, he shook my hand. I wasn’t expecting it but I was excited for sure.”

The Red Wings round out their run of three-in-three tomorrow when they again face the Hurricanes. Tonight’s game is the rearranged meeting from 19th December where ice cooling issues at PNC Arena caused the game to be canceled.
