Pre-Game: Colorado Avalanche Vs St Louis Blues 3/31/17

David Zalubowski, The Associated Press

Tonight the Colorado Avalanche (20-53-3) will face off against the St Louis Blues (42-28-6 ). We have confirmation from Kyle Keefe that all of Tyson Jost‘s affairs are in order and he will be in the lineup! Tonight’s game marks the last game on the calendar that the team will be wearing their alternate jerseys as well. Interesting timing if I do say so myself. Ushering in the kid with the alternate jerseys. Isn’t the timing of things so interesting in hockey, and in life sometimes?

Fans are pretty excited to see the new kid as is evident by this tweet by one fan

Here is a look at the Navy helmets and warmups from this morning. This is done every morning that the team is wearing their alternates on the game day

For the St Louis Blues, this is a big game as it could be the 2 points they need to clinch their postseason appearance. Fitting that it could come against a division foe. For the Avalanche it is a very exciting time as we continue to see Sven Andreghetto put up big numbers since joining the team. Avalanche fans also get their first chance to see last years 10th overall draft selection by the Avalanche in game action for the team. From morning practices it appears that he will be put straight onto the 2nd line for tonight centering a line with captain Gabe Landeskog on the left wing and Matt Duchene on the right wing.

If we are going to really get a look at what this Jost kid can do and where he is developmentally at this stage in his career then I suppose there is no better way to do it then to put him on the ice with some skill players and give him the big ice time to show us what he can do at this level.

Here is what Jost had to say to at Pepsi center earlier today

“I want to be a part of the rebuild and I want to do whatever I can to help this team in that rebuild stage. Obviously, they’re struggling a little bit, but I think I can bring some energy and some pace into this lineup. I’m still very honored and happy to be part of this organization.”

While many fans may look at these last few games of the year as essentially throw away games that couldn’t be further from the truth. The teams that they are playing on a nightly basis are desperate for the points to either clinch their playoff berth as tonight or to jockey for playoff positioning. This means that the young kids that are getting their shot to impress the coaching staff and avalanche management are going to have to be performing in not just some preseason fluff game where you might only play a line and a half of NHL talent, but in games where the opposition is desperate and willing to do anything it takes to get the win. Can Jost, Compher, Andreghetto, Nieto, Lindholm and the other young players trying to impress and earn a full-time roster spot next season with the team bring that same energy and

Can Jost, Compher, Andreghetto, Nieto, Lindholm and the other young players trying to impress and earn a full-time roster spot next season with the team bring that same energy and compete level tonight and the rest of the way? We shall see, but this is a huge opportunity for some of these guys to show what they can do against hungry and desperate competition.

These are all things that can make for the rest of the season to be some very entertaining hockey for the fans. We may not be going to the second season this year, but we sure have some pretty amazing things to look forward to as early as next season. This is just our first taste of some of these kids that we will be seeing on full display starting as early as next season.

Predictions

Bold predictions here, but Jost gets his first 2 points tonight of his NHL career, Andrighetto has another multi-point night, and the Avalanche lose the game eventually, but still come out and score 4 goals and lose 4-6 with the Blues scoring an empty netter late.

This has been rough for the fans this season but let’s not forget how rough it is for the players as well. Let’s try and give it our best to get out to the last few homes games and really show the team our support. Lets let them know that we are behind them and we are excited to see what they can bring next season after this off season of work and preparation.
