The Detroit Red Wings today called up RW Evgeny Svechnikov from AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. He will make his NHL debut tonight against Ottawa at Joe Louis Arena (7 pm).

Selected by Detroit in the first round (19th overall) in the 2015 Draft, Svechnikov stands at 6ft 3in tall and weighs in at 205lbs. So far this season, he has 44 points (18goals, 26 assists) and 56 penalty minutes in 68 games for the Griffins.

Svechnikov is expected to wear the #37 jersey and will play on a line with Dylan Larkin and Justin Abdelkader. Detroit coach, Jeff Blashill said of Svechnikov

“β€œI got to see him a few weeks ago, I went over to Grand Rapids during our bye week, He did a real good job. Everything I had heard up until that point was that he had really, really grown as a player throughout the year.

β€œHe works extremely hard at his game. In training camp, he showed some flashes of skill but needed probably to learn how to be effective. I think over the course of the season, it seems like he has taken the steps in the right direction to learn how to be efficient and effective – making a lot of plays to create offense and being good defensively.”

Svechnikov’s call up is a result of illness to Drew Miller. If not needed for the Wings’ game in Ottawa tomorrow, he will return to the Griffins who play in Manitoba on Tuesday.

In other news, Axel Holmstrom (no relation to Tomas) has been assigned to Grand Rapids from Swedish team Skellefta AIK.
