Today the Colorado Avalanche have announced that they have bought out the remaining year on Francois Beauchemin’s contract. He had 1 year left on his deal with a cap hit of $4.5 million dollars. Beauchemin also had a no-movement clause in his contract so because of this he would have had to be one of the players that were protected in the coming NHL Expansion Draft.

The buyout option will cost the Avalanche $1.5 million in cap space this next season and the season after that. That will free up a bit of cap space for the team this next season but more importantly, it gives them a free spot that should allow them to protect a player like Mark Barberio if they should choose to on the defensive side. They now have an option to protect someone else. It is thought that they Avalanche will be protecting Erik Johnson, Tyson Barrie, Nikita Zadorov and .. fill in the blank. It had to be Beauchemin before the buyout. Mark Barberio makes the most sense to me here. He is a player who I really liked this last season. This last season it was pretty tough for anyone to really look good but Barberio showed some really solid flashes of solid play. I feel like his play style fits very well with the way that Coach Bednar wants this team to play. He also fits Joe’s comments he continues to make about “getting younger and faster.”

Here is a tweet from Adrian Dater (check him out on Twitter @adater)

What do you think Avalanche fans out there? Was this the right move? If the team can hold onto Mark Barberio I think that it is a move that will be positive for the team moving forward. This is by no means a shot at Beauchemin, he is a great person and leader on the ice for many of the teams he has played for over his long career. Unfortunately, as it does with all of us at some point (Unless our name is Jaromir Jagr, but that is another story all together.) that silly thing called age has started to catch up this last season on him.

This could be the first of many moves for the Colorado Avalanche in the next couple weeks that include the Expansion Draft on the 21st the NHL Entry Draft on the 23rd-24th. Then the starting of the UFA signing period on July 1st.
