The Colorado Avalanche have made a couple rounds of cuts now to reduce their current roster. September 18th they reduced their pre-season roster by 5 when they sent down…
|D||Josh Anderson||Prince George (WHL)|
|G||Sam Brittain||San Antonio (AHL)|
|D||Tom Gregoire||Sherbrooke (QMJHL)|
|C||Hugo Roy||Sherbrooke (QMJHL)|
|LW||Ben Storm||San Antonio (AHL)|
Today, Wednesday the 20th of September the Avalanche made the second round of cuts when they reassigned Gage Ausmus, Nicolas Meloche, and Ty Lewis. These moves bring their total roster number down to 48.
Defencemen Gage Ausmus was reassigned to The San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. He was a training camp invitee who earned a spot with the Rampage to start this season.
Defencemen Nicolas Meloche was assigned to The San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. So far this is the only small surprise to me from the cuts to this point. I thought that Meloche came to prospect camp and really looked to be further along developmentally then I personally had anticipated. I thought that he might end up being a later cut in the preseason allowing the coaching staff to get a better look at where he is currently at. I think that he could be a potential call-up when injuries come on the blue line this season for the Avalanche. I thought going into this offseason that Meloche was still a year or 2 away from being ready, but that he had a very strong shot at becoming an NHL regular one day. Seeing the jump in his development and his determination to put in the work in the off season has me feeling like he could be a year off that origional prediction now.
Left winger Ty Lewis was reassigned to Brandon of the WHL.
As expected we will see a few cuts here and there every day or 2 through the pre season as the 2017-2018 eddition of the Colorado Avalanche will begin to beocme more and more clear.
From now on the players to be cut will start to get a bit more interesting as many of the players who were clearly going to be starting the season with the AHL or another minor league affiliate have now been assigned. The most interesting battle that will be taking place this preseason will be on the blue line as the team hopes to get much younger, faster, and smarter as Joe Sakic mentioned in the interview during the broadcast of last nights preseason game seen on Altitude TV.
What do you think of the preseason roster so far? What young player(s) are you most excited to see in preseason games this year? Do you think that we have anyone who could get a surprise start with the NHL club this year?
Will be excited to see what your thoughts are as the team begins to take shape over the next 11 days.
