The Colorado Avalanche going into this offseason have a couple of decisions to make when it comes to their goaltending position. To start with let’s take a look at the depth chart down the system.

Here are the Avalanches goalies they have through the system right now. Only Grubauer is currently signed to a contract that extends beyond this last season. It will be interesting to see who if any they decide to retain the services of.

Philipp Grubauer

Age: 27

Current Contract:  signed through the 2020-2021 season.

Cap hit: $3,333,33

Expected 2019-2020 season role: Starting goaltender

Semyon Varlamov

Age: 31

Current Contract: Expired

Expected 2019-2020 season role: Unknown potentially signed with another NHL team.

Cap hit: was $5,900,000

Pavel Francouz

Age: 28

Current Contract: Expired

Cap hit: was $690,000

Expected 2019-2020 season role: Unknown, likely to be resigned by the Colorado Avalanche.

Joe Cannata

Age: 29

Current Contract: Expired

Cap hit: was $655,000

Expected 2019-2020 role: Unknown.

Spencer Martin

Age: 23

Current Contract: Expired

Cap hit: was $650,000

Expected 2019-2020 role: Unknown.

Semyon Varlamov has told various reporters and media outlets that he would like to stay with the Avalanche and that he has enjoyed his time in Denver.  Philipp Grubauer has taken the starting goaltender job down the stretch run and through the first two rounds of the playoffs this season with excellent play. Going into the playoffs he was one of the three hottest goalies in the NHL.  If the Avalanche decides to retain the services of Semyon Varlamov as a back up to Grubauer it is expected that they will want to sign him to a significantly lower contract than his previous contract with the higher then 5 million cap hit.

The top 3 UFA goalies expected to hit the market

Sergei Bobrovsky, 30
2018-19 cap hit: $7,425,000

Robin Lehner, 27
2018-19 cap hit: $1,500,000

Semyon Varlamov, 31
2018-19 cap hit: $5,900,000

What would you do?

If you were the one calling the shots for the Colorado Avalanche who would you resign? Would you try and bring in any of the top 3 expected UFA goalies? Would you try and make a trade? Would you do something totally different to address the goaltending depth next season? Let us know and we can have some discussion about it!

Currently Unsigned prospects

**First off an apology as I did not include the unsigned goalie prospects in the system originally. I take the blame for this and wanted to say that I am sorry for the mistake.

Anyways onto the unsigned goalie prospects that the Avalanche currently hold the rights to.
